United Frequent Flier Miles
Since Wi-Fi is becoming such an important part of the flight experience, airlines are finding new ways to make it more accessible. Currently, JetBlue offers free Wi-Fi in many of its planes while Virgin Airlines is jumping on the bandwagon. Although United isn’t equipped to offer free Wi-Fi for all, they are starting to be freer with their Wi-FI as they will now let passengers purchase Wi-Fi time with their United frequent flier miles. Still, with all the good news, there are caveats, and there are two important issues that you should consider.

Issue One: Wi-Fi For Many, Not Wi-Fi For All

It is no surprise that technology has increased by leaps and bounds over the last few years, especially when it comes to what we can do on a plane. We can listen to music; watch almost any movie or television show, plug in our devices and so much more. At the moment, the sky’s the limit, except when it comes to Wi-Fi. The unbelievable fact is that the technology is just not where it needs to be to enable every single passenger to get Wi-Fi, which is understandable when you realize that you are in a metal tube in the sky. Of course, Wi-Fi for all passengers is a possibility, but it will come at a price, which leads us to the next issue.

Issue Two: It May Not Be Cheap

Even though the technology is not quite up to the task, United is still willing to allow as many passengers as possible to get Wi-Fi service using their air miles, but it will cost you. If you choose to go the mileage route, it will cost 3,500 miles for each hour of Wi-Fi that you use, that is comparable to around $9 an hour. That may be acceptable for a shorter flight but a longer international flight could cost you a fortune. If you are short miles but still want to get some of that sweet Internet goodness, remember that The Mileage Club offers great chances to buy miles without breaking the bank. What Can You Do With Your Wi-Fi?

This discussion wouldn’t be complete without mentioning all the great services you can access if you take the plunge and buy your Wi-Fi time with United frequent flier miles. If you are behind deadlines on that big work project, you can use the Wi-Fi with your laptop to access all the files you may need. If your child is getting fidgety and you can’t seem to find a good entertainment option with the channels that United provides, you can use that Wi-Fi to stream the newest cartoons for their entertainment. The uses for mid-air Wi-Fi are endless, but are they enough to be worth your hard earned air miles?
