Air miles are also popularly known as frequent flyer miles. To put it simply for those who are unfamiliar with both the terms, air miles are the collective air travel miles that have been accumulated through different loyalty programs. To start off with Airlines offer loyalty programs to their most loyal customers. They reward you with points every time you fly with them. When a certain number of points have been collected you can use them for discounted airline tickets, hotels, and car rentals. Don’t let the name fool you. You don’t have to travel frequently in order to earn airline miles. You can earn them through various other mediums as well.

1. How To Earn Frequent Flyer Miles

credit card
You can earn frequent flyer miles by signing up for a travel reward credit card. You can sign up for a credit card that partner with the airline of your choice. Usually, when you sign up for such credit cards you get 30,000 airline miles by default, depending on the card and the bonuses that they offer.

You can also earn airline miles when you purchase certain items through your credit cards. Co-branded travel credit cards provide double or more for every dollar that is spent with a specific hotel or airline. Other purchases earn one point for each dollar that you spend. You can easily save up quite a bit of reward points if you take all this into consideration and use them towards your next trip.

To make matters, even more, simpler, there are some credit cards that go as far as to give their customers airline reward points for everyday necessities like gas, electricity bill, groceries, eating out, and even buying coffee from Starbucks.

2. Is Buying Airline Miles Legal?

Buying airline miles is completely legal all over the USA. Airlines encourage their passengers to buy airline miles through them. A lot of the big carriers have special discount prices on their airline miles as well.

As said before you can purchase airline miles directly from the airline of your choice and you can do this by going to their reward program page. American Airlines reward program website is called AAdvantage, Delta calls their Sky Miles and British Airways has Executive Club. All you have to do is click on the ‘buy link’ button on the screen and they’ll guide you through the process.

One of the most important things to keep in mind is that the cost of airline miles varies from airline to airline. American Airlines sells theirs for 2.5 to 2.75 cents per mile. Buying airline reward points only makes sense if you’re a little shy of reaching your actual goal. You don’t want the cost of your miles to exceed the price of the actual ticket. That will just defeat the purpose of airline miles.

Another way to buy airline miles is through internet brokers. Buying and selling through brokers are frowned upon by airlines, but it’s not illegal. Be warned though, you don’t want to be caught. Basically, the broker acts as a middle man between the buyer and the seller. Information will need to exchanged, along with your preferred travel dates, price range, and service class. They will then match you with a seller, once all parties agree to the terms the transaction between the two parties takes place.
